The Tarrant County College – Northeast ACS Student Chapter has been a standout example of student leadership and scientific success since its start in Spring 2016. Founded by me, Dr. D, who served as the sole faculty advisor until Spring 2018, the chapter began as a fully student-driven effort built on passion, hard work, and a shared love for chemistry.

The chapter’s first president, Kristopher Row, was instrumental in assisting Dr. D to create this club, setting the tone for what this group could achieve. Kristopher went on to earn his Ph.D. in biology and, last I heard, is now teaching. It’s a great reminder of how mentorship and involvement in student organizations can shape a career.

Of course, the road wasn’t without a few bumps. In 2018-2019 and 2019-2020, the chapter hit a rough patch during a faculty advisor transition as I tried to step down. Despite the students’ best efforts, no submissions were made. Thankfully, the chapter found its footing again in 2020 under the leadership of Professor Steven Rooney, who joined as co-advisor despite the global shut down courtesy of Rona. Working together, Professor Rooney and I helped rebuild the chapter’s foundation, and it’s been thriving ever since.

This final year marks the end of an era for me as I depart in 2024 after nearly a decade of involvement. It’s been an absolute privilege to work with such a dedicated group of students and alongside Professor Rooney, who has been instrumental in keeping the chapter strong. Good news is I get to do it all over again with College of Southern Nevada – Student Chapter.

The chapter’s success reflects the energy, creativity, and grit of its members. From its roots with early leaders like Kristopher Row to the latest batch of student innovators, the legacy lives on. I can’t wait to see what comes next for this group.
