General chemistry often acts as a roadblock in STEM fields, leading to high dropout rates because students struggle to balance algorithmic and conceptual learning. At CSN, we’ve seen that active learning strategies help, but they haven’t fully addressed the challenge, especially in General Chemistry II, where both skill sets are crucial. This project will compare student success in General Chemistry II using a conceptual framework combined with an entrepreneurial project versus a traditional curriculum. By focusing on deeper conceptual understanding and real-world application, we expect to see better knowledge transfer, improved grades, and higher matriculation rates, helping more students stay on the STEM track.
